System-on-Chip (SoC) and multicore architectures are being increasingly used in a diverse set of real world applications. By being able to adopt efficient component reuse and platform based design, the advent of true SoC design strategies and methodologies would dramatically impact the production cost and the breadth of functionality. The integration of multiple cores on the same chip has signaled the beginning of communication-centric, rather than computation-centric systems. Dr. Kim's primary area of research is Multicore Designs, Network-on-Chip(NoC) / System-on-Chip(SoC) Architectures, Memory-Based Solutions, High Performance Computing, and Energy-Efficient and Reliable Systems. As on-going/near-future topics, he has been involved in 3D Architectures and Nano System Design. He achieved theoretical advances on the interplay between performance, energy, and reliability in deep-submicron designs, and developed new/improved interconnect solutions. He designed effective fault-tolerant techniques for handling transient and permanent errors in on-chip networks. Before joining the Pennsylvania State University, he had worked at LG Electronics and Neopoint for several years, and participated in the development of handheld devices/PDA, AMPS(EIA/TIA-553), CDMA(IS-95) cellular phone and wireless internet platform. He had worked on Mobile Computing and Embedded Systems, Power Management, and CDMA Subscriber Architecting (IS-95, IS-95A/B and J-STD-008). He is a member of IEEE and ACM/SIGARCH. He served as a technical referee for numerous journals and conferences including IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS), IEEE Transactions on Computer (TC), International Symposium on High-Performance Computer Architecture, International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium, International Conference on Parallel Processing, and European Conference on Parallel Computing.
