Abstract

Gulfstream Aerospace is engaged in basic sonic boom suppression research and technology that would potentially allow unrestricted supersonic travel over populated areas. This research is conducted internally as well as externally through collaboration with academic and government organizations. The extent of the effort encompasses multiple engineering disciplines and a diverse spectrum of study. Some of the areas under investigation are aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, acoustics, and systems integration. A brief history behind Gulfstream's activities to-date will be given. Highlights from some of the significant accomplishments will also be presented. It should be noted that Gulfstream's position with respect to supersonic flight remains the same, in that without a change to the regulations that prohibit supersonic flight over land Gulfstream does not believe there is a business case for a supersonic business jet.
